30 PM CentralJOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the Division Manager, the Senior Assistant County Attorney is responsible for providing legal services and representing the County, State or local municipalities in a wide variety of complex civil, criminal or juvenile matters.
Duties include providing legal advice and training to county divisions/employees/officials; conducting legal research; evaluating, preparing, and presenting cases in legal proceedings including motions, hearings, trials and appeals; and preparing and drafting legal documents.
The Senior Assistant County Attorney is very experienced in all legal matters in their areas of law and are given more complex assignments.
Duties, responsibilities, and cases assigned require a great degree of skill and experience analyzing a variety of legal issues.
Assignments for the Senior Assistant County Attorney are performed under minimal technical supervision and direction.
The Senior Assistant County Attorney leads and coordinates the completion of assigned work of support staff, paralegals and law clerks, as well as provides mentoring and advice to Assistant County Attorneys and law clerks.
Work is reviewed by the Senior Assistant County Attorney and when the work results in opinions, pleadings or advice that are issued outside the of the County Attorney's Office, the work goes out under the signature of the Senior Assistant County Attorney.
The Senior Assistant County Attorney exercises independent judgment and uses their breadth of experience regarding matters of law including charging cases, case review, case management, negotiations and settlements.
This position will work in the Civil Division.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES oRepresents the County, State or municipalities in court proceedings, legal proceedings or administrative hearings including all criminal, civil or juvenile proceedings as assigned.
oProvides mentorship for Assistant County Attorney.
Advises and trains county divisions, employees and other agencies (e.
g.
, law enforcement) on matters of law or significant legal issues or trends that impact operations and procedures.
Advises county employees and represents the work of county employees as it relates to legal proceedings and issues.
Responds to general questions of the public concerning legal issues.
oReviews cases and legal information to determine appropriate legal actions on behalf of the County, State or municipality.
oDrafts and prepares, or coordinates the preparation of various legal documents including letters, stipulations, affidavits, briefs, complaints, legal memoranda or other documents necessary in pending legal actions.
oDrafts appellate briefs and appears at subsequent presentation of arguments before the higher courts.
Provides research, writing and trial support for the County Attorney or other legal staff, as assigned.
oPerforms other duties of a comparable type and level, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS oJuris Doctoral degree in law from an accredited law school oFive (5) years of experience as an Assistant County Attorney or equivalent experience as a practicing attorney oA valid Minnesota Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility oA valid license to practice law in the State of MN SCORED EXAMINATION PROCESS All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked.
The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews).
Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, and background investigation, including CJIS fingerprinting.
